NEET 2018: 15 lakh students registered for NEET Exam

NEET 2018: 15 lakh students registered for NEET exam this year – As the NEET 2018 exams are approaching closer, tensions and curiosity is building high among the students who have applied for the examination. This year the number of applicants applying for the NEET 2018 has been increased by enormous numbers where around 15 lakh aspirants have been registered for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2018 for medical and dental seats in the country. In the year 2017, NEET examination was conducted in two phases where around 7.5 lakhs students appeared for the examination. As there are only 56,000 seats available in Medical and Dental Institutes across the country, this year the admission process is bound to get much tougher.

NEET examination was first conducted in the country in May 2013 for admissions into medical and dental courses, and thereafter the medical admission process has gone through a lot of changes in the past few years. Also, Supreme Court on September 2013 had scrapped this NEET examination, thereby ordering state governments to conduct their own entrance examination for all the aspiring candidates.
Sudha Shenoy one of the applicant’s parent stated that “ In 2016, many students ended up skipping the entrance exam because NEET called for the CBSE syllabus whereas most students were depending on state board syllabus for their state conducted entrance examinations. Along with fresh candidates, most who took a drop of a year will also be vying for these seats this year,
Maharashtra Government in the year 2015, conducted state-based medical entrance exam MH-CET. But in the year 2016, Supreme Court once again reinforced each and every state to conduct the examination on the basis of NEET, making a single window entrance exam for admission into all medical and dental institutes in the country. While for the year 2016, SC allowed state governments to conduct CET’s for admissions into state government run institutes and made it clear that from 2018 onwards NEET will be the only common medical test applicable for admissions into medical and dental institutes.

Dr. Pravin Shingare, director of Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), stated that “Since Maharashtra will no longer conduct a common entrance test for any of the health science courses, all students from the state have to apply for NEET ”. He also added that another reason for the increase in a number of applicants is also the amended law which makes NEET also compulsory for students vying for the seats in the NRI quota, management quota etc. “ Everybody will invariably have to opt for NEET this year, in order to be eligible for medical and dental seats,”.
